Collaborative Health Education Symposia

UBC Health facilitates connections and joint ventures across academic units and with external partners. Through the Collaborative Health Education Symposia series, we aim to foster a culture of purposeful collaborations to advance our strategic objectives of education innovation, expanded placements, and an education ecosystem of team-based care.

Recognizing that collaborative health education can only be progressed through a combination of internal facilitation and external mobilization—with faculty members and academic units playing a key role alongside UBC Health—the Collaborative Health Education Symposia are designed to activate and channel the health assets of the university towards our collective aims. By bringing together interested partners around educational issues of common concern, the symposia:

  1. Facilitate knowledge exchange and synergies
  2. Mobilize and coordinate partners
  3. Create an impetus for internal collaboration

Each symposium brings partners together in order to:

  • Discuss an educational issue that demands a collaborative approach
  • Connect diverse expertise and resources across disciplines
  • Facilitate connection and promote collaborative ventures

UBC Health will bring partners together around issues, such as:

  • Enhancing substance use and addictions content
  • Developing collaborative practice education
  • Engaging patient and community educators
  • Addressing rural practice education

Each collaborative health education symposium will drive continued transformations in teaching and learning across health and health-related programs, in both classroom and clinical settings, to help foster practices of team-based care.

Going Rural: Enhancing Practice Education

Thursday, October 21, 2021
8:30-11:00 am

This symposium is about practice education in rural and remote areas of BC and will focus on the Rural Education Acceleration and Collaboration in Health (REACH) action framework. REACH is intended to increase the number of health student placements in rural and remote areas of BC. The REACH project aligns with UBC Health’s strategic priority to help health programs develop models that build placement capacity across the province.

The symposium will bring together health partners who have a role in facilitating the delivery of practice education in rural and remote areas of BC to discuss the REACH action framework development process, contents, and lessons learned as well as identify collaborative opportunities to utilize the framework in order to enhance capacity and quality of rural and remote practice education.

The session will include opening remarks from Dr. Ray Markham (Special Advisor to the Vice-President, Health on Health Systems at UBC and Executive Director of the Rural Coordination Centre of BC), followed by a presentation about the REACH action framework and group discussions around the roles of different partners in moving the framework forward.

Substance Use and Addiction Education

June 2021

In recognition of the importance of substance use education and training at the pre-licensure level and beyond, UBC Health has partnered with BCCSU to strengthen collaborative health education, training, and research opportunities related to substance use and addiction across disciplines. Given the prevalence of substance use disorders, it is important that all healthcare providers have a foundational level of competency in the area of substance use and addiction care.

UBC Health conducted an environmental scan to: 1) identify existing substance use and addiction content across programs on both UBC campuses, inclusive of both classroom and clinical placement experiences; and 2) help start to identify opportunities to enhance substance use and addiction education and training across disciplines.

The Substance Use and Addiction Education symposium brought together faculty and partners involved in substance use and addiction education across both campuses to discuss this pressing health topic and identify opportunities to enhance existing offerings both uni-disciplinarily and collaboratively.
